Facial Rolling: How To Do It & Why?

Most of us have heard of the newest skincare accessory, which will not only revolutionize your routine but promises to plump, de-puff, and brighten. A new holy-grail of skincare, it has been widely recommended by experts and loved by celebrities – we’re here to tell you why it is so popular!

Facial rolling isn’t a new phenomenon, and in fact, has been practiced in traditional Chinese skincare for thousands of years. Used for facial massage, it helps sculpt and define features byways of encouraging drainage and toning slackening muscles – because let’s be honest, we all want contoured cheekbones without the hassle of full glam! Facial rolling tools are typically made from jade, rose quartz or amethyst, and are designed to remove toxins from the skin by stimulating the lymphatic system to smooth fine lines, minimize dark circles and decrease puffiness as well as increase blood flow to maximize your skin’s glow.

Beauty is moving back to holistic rituals rather than superficial products to support long-term results. We’ve reverted to incorporating traditional methods within our daily regimes and guess what? We love them! This simple, yet effective tool offers an abundance of results and we’re sure you’ll be hooked once you see them!

How Does Facial Rolling Work?

Facial rollers tend to incorporate crystals because of their cooling nature, and also help to ease tension and decrease inflammation – perfect for those prone to headaches or breakouts! According to celebrity aesthetician Angela Caglia, rose quartz rollers specifically, not only help to drain and contour the face but are also said to help boost self-esteem, whereas jade rollers are said to ward off negative energy.

Designed as a heavenly ritual, these tools provide a deep-tissue facial massage to help stimulate blood flow and drain excess fluid whilst promoting protein synthesis, which is responsible for plumpness and elasticity and is the key to anti-aging. Whether manual or vibrating, these super-star beauty essentials help boost the absorption of products by encouraging ingredients to penetrate more deeply into the skin’s epidermis. When used alongside an effective anti-aging cream or serum, you’ll see a vast improvement in the condition of your skin and reduced skin sagging, resulting in a toned and lifted complexion. Even better, face rolling over your makeup gives skin a beautiful, healthy glow, and helps achieve a more natural, less made-up finish.

The Benefits of Facial Rolling

Facial rolling works on so many levels, according to expert facialist Sarah Chapman, working frequent massage sessions into your skincare routine will deliver astounding results. “Regular use brightens, tightens, drains toxins, and reduces puffiness by boosting the supply of vital nutrients and oxygen to your skin, giving you that immediate, fresh glow,” she says. Regularly massaging your face with a facial roller will change the shape and contour of your face too. Similar to the muscles in our body, facial muscles get tight, hold tension, and become lax through lack of use.

Not only that, but Hollie Simpson, skin practitioner and founder of One Skin Academy, suggests it can increase the effectiveness of your other skincare products. “Facial rolling helps with blood flow and also helps to stimulate product penetration, to ensure products are effectively working and feeding the skin from the inside.”

One of the biggest benefits of skin rolling is the effect it has on your body’s lymphatic system. This essential system works by collecting and removing toxins within your body. Using a facial roller when your body is overexposed to these toxins helps reduce and eliminate lymph stagnation. According to Lamees Hamdan, M.D. founder and CEO of Shiffa, there are two key things to keep in mind when using a facial roller. “There is no point in rolling your face expecting drainage if you haven’t started with your neck first," she says. "You need to roll your neck first to clear the lymph passageways before starting on your face." Secondly, she cautions against pressing too hard. Use a light hand; the weight of the roller will do the rest.

How To Use A Facial Roller

1. Use the roller hot or cold with cream, serum, or oil, and always roll in an upwards motion in one direction, not back and forth.

2. Start from the bottom of your neck and roll upwards towards your jaw. Do this for a minimum of five rolls per motion.

3. Next along your jawline, roll outwards towards your ears.

4. Then position the roller in the center of your forehead and roll upwards and outwards towards your temple – this can be especially useful when you have a headache.

5. Lastly use the smaller end to roll alongside the nose and outwards underneath the eyes – ensure you use light motions due to the sensitivity of the skin around this area.

6. Use your roller two to three times a week for five to ten minutes to achieve consistent results.

The Expert Tip For Using Your Facial Roller

Use your facial roller hot or cold: Keeping your facial roller chilled in the fridge will tighten pores and wake a weary face at the end of a long day, first thing in the morning or even before a big event. Use hot by dipping your roller in warm water for 30 seconds, dry, and then use with a face cream or serum like a hot stone massager. Not only are the effects incredibly relaxing, but it’s a great primer for make-up too!
